Namaste.
The Northeast India, also called the land of seven sisters, is a fascinating place with enchanted frontiers. Bounded by China on the North, Bangladesh on the West and Myanmar on the South and East, the region which consists of nearly 4% of the India’s population. The Northeastern states are only connected to mainland India by a narrow bottleneck called the Siliguri corridor or chicken’s neck. Most of these are still relatively unexplored and there is little written about them compared with most Indian states.
Shillong is a hill station and one of the largest urban areas in the northeast India. Shillong also acts as the gateway to Meghalaya, the state famous for heavy rainfall, caves, tallest waterfalls, beautiful landscapes and amazing people and their culture. Shillong peak view point offers a breathtaking bird-eye view of the entire city, the Himalayas, and the Bangladesh plains.
Cherrapunji, aka Sohra or Churra (the land of oranges), is a pristine beauty located in the heart of Meghalaya, sits neatly on the edge of Himalayas and also offer stunning views of the plains of Bangladesh. Road leading from Shillong to this miniscule village passes through the magnificent scenery, greens down the hilly roads, and the gentle breeze will give you a good piece of mind.
Here are the places that convince you to visit the magical Cherrapunji:
Living Root Bridges. Cherrapunji is famous for its living root bridges, a result of bio-engineering practiced by the locals. It's quite a mission to get there. The most popular trekking route is the one that leads to the Double Decker Living Root bridge in Nongriat village.
Nohkalikai Falls. Cherrapunji is home to the most amazing waterfalls, one of them is Nohkalikai falls. The splashes as the water hit the rocks are a thing of beauty to watch.
Seven Sister Falls. The falls are a great tourist attraction during the monsoon season and must definitely feature on your northeast India itinerary.
Mawsmai Cave. These magnificent caves are formed out of limestone and are quite long and deep. However, tourists can only cover 150 m inside it and the remaining caves are off-limit for the visitors.
Mawsynram. Crowned as the wettest place on earth, the village of Mawsynram is a nature lover’s dream and the best place to witness the fury of the rains. With 11,872 mm of rainfall received annually, Mawsynram beats Cherrapunji by a slender margin.
Dawki. Head to Dawki, a town between India and Bangladesh. Now Dawkis most treasured gem is the Umngot river. Sitting on its bank staring at its depth for a moment, you realize the peace and calmness seeping in.
They say its not the place that you fall in love with, but the people living there. They are undoubtedly wonderful hosts, the khasis. They are a shy lot and tend to avoid being photographed, but their smiles are the reason that makes cherrapunji a heaven.
