Namaste.
Hazel Grace Lancaster diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer, she believes she has come to terms with what her life has become. She makes an instant connection with osteosarcoma survivor Augustus Waters at a Cancer Youth Support Group. At first, she tries to push him away, but later they develop a strong friendship. He uses his wish to take her to Amsterdam to meet a reclusive author she loves, they end up in loving each other. And though she soon learns that Gus has a painful secret, Hazel understands that loving others is worth it, even when it leaves a scar.
"The marks humans leave are too often scars."
This is a tearjerker dealing with dying and surviving the death of a loved one. The movie is heart-warming and it makes us cry about how they struggle in their life. The courage and humor, the energy and despair all keep you on an emotional roller coaster. This story reveals the complexities of each character and shares their personality beyond their illnesses. The friendships as well as the depths the families go through preparing for the worst without losing out hope.
“The world is not a wish-granting factory.”
Hazel hadn't wished Gus to see her in the intensive care. Hazel didn't have the possibility to change her sick days to healthy ones; Peter didn't turned out as the Hazel and Gus hoped. Gus didn't know his condition is going to be fatal. Life is so unfair sometimes but accepting the world's inconsistency and focusing on good ones we have, will obviously change your life.
"I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things."
Gus said to Hazel that how much he loves her by saying this. They two didn't abandoned their pleasures at any cost. Like them, we should not deny our pleasures of doing things because they might give you the greatest joys.
“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities… But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity.”
We've all been taught about quality and quanity but never through a deeply connected story. Gus and Hazel's love proves that it's not the number of days that gives us a forever. Some infinites are bigger than others, but it is how you fill that infinity.
“You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.”
"That's the thing about pain. It demands to be felt."
While some of us release our anger at that moment, some will bottle them up and attempt to deal with them all the day. Hazel spent all the time in a self-inflicted world to hide her pain. Let someone in and let them know your feelings when you're facing a challenge and don't forget to embrace yourself.
“Grief doesn’t change you, Hazel. It reveals you.”
"It's a good life, Hazel Grace."
"It certainly is, Augustus. It certainly is."
Hazel and Gus has showed us some of the most amazing things in life. Through their love story, we learn that we must recognize simple pleasures and make memories; also we must accept the unfair nature of the universe, but not let it strip of our hope. In the end, we learn that it's a good life only if we allow it to see that way.
"The World wasn't made for us, we were made for the World." - John Green
