There are always two or three or four sides of every story.

Namaste.

If a rape happens in this country every 15 minutes and we are only shocked about just a few of them, who is to be blamed? Why does someone’s death matter more than someone else’s?

Jana Gana Mana deserves a praise for delving deep into extrajudicial killings — which many glorify as instant justice — and pointing out its dangers. It is a thought-provoking socio-political drama that displays incidents that reminds us of how the world of the movie is not too different from the world we live in. It also highlights how quickly we judge a person's character, especially a woman's, based on what she wears.

The charred body of an outspoken female professor who stands up against the administration for various issues concerning the students, is found near the highway, and the incident leads to a massive public outcry. Police are in charge of booking the culprits, and their attempts to execute the same isn’t as simple as any regular investigation. The film shows who the real criminals behind the act are and how their ploys get unmasked.

Jana Gana Mana is about a rape and murder case that becomes sensationalised owing to the victim's faith, and how politicians exploit it by giving instant justice to the criminals and wooing the vote banks. Hardly does any mainstream movie talks about the dirty games politicians play or the excess measures taken by police officers, either on their own or because of undue influence from the top. It shakes you with its strong reasoning behind some rape cases getting more importance and the politics behind it.

It raises uncomfortable debates on how those who raise questions are branded and targeted, how the media sets narratives at the behest of the establishment, how it plays into the inherent biases of the common people, and how the politics of identity is used to divide people for votes.

Some of the real-life incidents depicted in this movie are:

Disha Case. A young veterinary doctor was kidnapped, gang-raped, murdered, and charred. Four people were arrested. But all four accused were killed in an encounter.

Rohit Vemula Case. He was a 26-year-old PhD student at Hyderabad Central University and he killed himself as he was treated like an untouchable. In the letter he wrote before he took his own life, he said, “My birth is my fatal accident.”

Rapes - Women's Clothing. Amid the hijab issue that happened in Karnataka, BJP MLA, M P Renukacharya, kicked up a controversy by saying that "rapes are increasing because of women’s clothes."

"The dignity of nation depends on the dignity it is given to the women."

University Protests. Police charging into university campus to quell a student protest in Jamia Millia(JMI) that flashed during the anti-CAA protests. Another incident is that of the lathi charge on ABVP students of Jnanabharati Campus of Bangalore University in January 2022.

Adivasi Man Incident. Madhu, a 30-year-old man who belonged to one of the tribes from Attapadi, was accused of stealing and beaten by a group of men. He died in the police jeep while he was being taken to the hospital.

Many facts in crimes don’t come to light in almost all the cases that are happening in India. Caste bias, discrimination and atrocities are Jana Gana Mana's main concerns, yet the reins of the battle are not handed to the marginalised community is in question.
